There is reason to believe that this bass was the replacement body/neck for the first model 4000, being B7100, issued in 1957. It appears that the original body/neck of B7100 was damaged and returned to the RIC factory circa 1961, where certain parts (horseshoe pickup, tuners, electronics) were transferred onto a maple body/neck model 4000 then under construction, with the serial number AI619 (September 1961) written in the pickup cavity. The 1957 bass originally had a mahogany neck with maple body wings and a Natural finish. The replacement bass, issued in Natural, was later refinished in Fireglo and given a new pickguard modeled after the original. The form-fit non-standard case appears to be original to this bass.
