1986 was the first year for the 5-string bass to join the production line, and this configuration of the 4003S/5 model lasted until 2002. This example was issued in Ruby, which was a color available in the '80s and was discontinued in the '90s, only to make a brief resurgence as a 'standard' finish color in 2012 through 2019. This short-lived model was essentially built on a standard 4003 platform with a modified bridge/tailpiece, elongated headstock and a 5-pole bridge pickup.
